The food in Palenque is relatively simple. It is easy to find fresh local dishes, wonderful fruit and homemade tortillas, but don’t expect haute cuisine. There is not much nightlife either. In town, there are several restaurants. Menus posted and most are open air. Just stroll around until you see one that looks good. La Canada, Palenque’s hotel zone is less hectic than the town. It consists of a couple of wide streets, huge trees a few hotels and restaurants Easy to see what strikes your fancy. There is some nightlife too. Here are a few others that we like.

La Pizzeria
On the second floor of the main square in Palenque. Great place to watch the world go by. Good pizza and pasta cooked when you order it so go prepared for a leisurely meal.

Chan Kan Resort Village
This is a beautiful hotel right outside the gates of the archaeological zone. There is large palapa restaurant that overlooks a lovely spring fed pool. The have an extensive menu including several local dishes. Great for a late lunch after visiting the ruins. Breakfast and dinner are served too.

MayabellMayabell

Just inside the gates to the archaeological zone. This is kind of a new age place, but there are all kinds of people here. The restaurant consists of 15 – 20 tables, under a palapa roof. The food is healthy, good and very reasonable. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner including egg dishes, pasta, and Mexican food. There is usually some live music in the evenings.
Shopping

There is not much to buy in Palenque. Bows and arrows made by the Lacandon Indians and local handicrafts. There are stalls outside the entrance of Palenque and in the main square in the evening.
